Creating a website: the work process

There's a plan to it

Creating a website is as much a creative as an organizational process. And I think it’s important to get you, my client, involved in that process, so you’ll be fully satisfied with the outcome.

Let me chop this story up in five tiny chapters…

work process of web design

Gathering information

I start by listening. It’s a crucial first step: it involves a good understanding of you and your business. What is the purpose of your site? What are your goals, what is your target audience? I’ll find out what kind of website will work best for you or your company. My consultation time is free.

Planning

I do my research: I familiarize myself with your market, your target audience, and your competition, as your website needs to be relevant and effective.

I’ll develop a site map: a list of all main topic areas of the site, as well as sub-topics, if applicable. This serves as a guide as to what content will be on the site, and is essential to developing a consistent, easy to understand navigational system. Elements such as interactive forms and ecommerce are discussed when planning your web site.

Design

Drawing from the information gathered up to this point, it’s time to determine the look and feel of your site. I will spend time researching and sketching ideas. I create various layouts and work towards a smart and compelling blueprint for the site. Together we will evaluate the directions I’ve explored. What I create needs to be well-tailored to your needs.

Stages of web design

Development

The web site itself is created. I’ll take all of the individual graphic elements from the prototype and use them to create the actual, functional site. Elements such as interactive contact forms, animations or ecommerce shopping carts are implemented and made functional during this phase, as well.

Testing and Delivery

Once the final details are in place, I’ll test your web site for complete functionality of forms or other scripts, and I ensure that your web site is optimized to be viewed properly in the most recent browser versions.

Finally, I’ll upload the web site files to your server. The site is now live on the Web.
